Apple has officially introduced the MacBook Neo, its most affordable laptop ever, marking a significant shift in the company’s laptop strategy. Starting at Rs 69,900 in India, the new device is designed for students, families, and everyday users who want the Mac experience without paying premium MacBook Air prices.

For years, the entry-level Apple laptop started with the MacBook Air, which currently begins at around Rs 1,19,900. With the launch of the MacBook Neo, Apple is clearly targeting a new segment of budget-conscious buyers who may otherwise choose affordable Windows laptops or Chromebooks.

The MacBook Neo also signals Apple’s intention to expand its ecosystem to more classrooms and homes around the world.

MacBook Neo: Apple’s Most Affordable MacBook Ever

The MacBook Neo price in India begins at Rs 69,900 for the 256GB storage model, while the 512GB variant costs Rs 79,900. Apple has announced that the laptop is available for pre-orders starting today, with official sales beginning March 11, 2026.

While Rs 69,900 is not exactly cheap in the broader laptop market, it is strategically important for Apple. With retail offers and student discounts, the effective price could drop closer to Rs 60,000, making it more competitive with mid-range Windows laptops.

This pricing approach could help Apple attract millions of users who have never owned a Mac before but already use an iPhone, iPad, or other Apple devices.

MacBook Neo Specs and Key Features

Despite its lower price, Apple has not stripped away the core Mac experience. The MacBook Neo specs focus on delivering balanced performance, portability, and battery efficiency.

13-inch Liquid Retina Display

The MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2408 × 1506 pixels. The display supports 1 billion colours and reaches 500 nits of brightness, ensuring vibrant visuals for everyday tasks like browsing, watching videos, or editing documents.

However, to maintain its lower price, Apple has removed ProMotion high refresh rate technology, which remains exclusive to higher-end models.

A18 Pro Chip Performance

One of the most interesting aspects of the MacBook Neo features is the processor. Instead of Apple’s traditional M-series chips used in MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, the Neo runs on the A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro.

The chip includes:

  • 6-core CPU (2 performance cores + 4 efficiency cores)
  • 5-core GPU
  • 8GB RAM
  • Storage options up to 512GB

While it may not match the raw power of the M-series chips, the A18 Pro still provides enough performance for everyday tasks like web browsing, document editing, streaming, and light creative work.

Apple also says the chip handles AI-powered applications and Apple Intelligence features smoothly, making the MacBook Neo capable of running modern productivity tools like ChatGPT, Canva, and other AI apps.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery efficiency is another strong point of the MacBook Neo.

Apple claims the laptop can deliver up to 16 hours of video streaming on a single charge, making it suitable for students or professionals who need an all-day device.

The laptop includes a 36.5 Wh battery and comes with a 20W charger in the box.

Unlike the MacBook Air, the Neo does not include a MagSafe charging port and instead relies on standard USB-C charging.

Design, Colours and Build Quality

Apple has also focused on making the MacBook Neo visually appealing, especially for younger users.

The laptop comes in four colour options:

  • Indigo
  • Citrus
  • Blush
  • Silver

The device features a sleek recycled aluminium enclosure, giving it the same premium feel associated with Apple laptops.

The design is fanless, similar to the MacBook Air, ensuring silent operation even during regular use.

However, to keep costs down, Apple made a few compromises:

  • Non-backlit keyboard
  • Two USB-C ports only
  • 1080p FaceTime HD camera
  • Dual speakers instead of quad speakers

Touch ID is available only on the higher-end 512GB model.

MacBook Neo and Apple Intelligence

Apple is positioning the MacBook Neo as a gateway device for its new Apple Intelligence ecosystem.

The laptop supports features such as:

  • AI Writing Tools for editing and summarizing text
  • Genmoji for creating custom emojis
  • Clean Up tool for removing unwanted objects from photos

Apple says most AI processing happens directly on the device, helping protect user privacy.

For more complex AI tasks, Apple uses its Private Cloud Compute system, which runs on Apple silicon servers without collecting personal data.

Mac + iPhone Ecosystem Advantages

One of the biggest selling points of the MacBook Neo is how seamlessly it integrates with the Apple ecosystem.

When paired with an iPhone, users can:

  • Make and receive calls and texts on the Mac
  • Copy and paste content across devices
  • Use AirDrop for quick file sharing
  • Enable Instant Hotspot
  • Mirror their iPhone screen on the Mac

For existing iPhone users, the MacBook Neo could be the most affordable way to complete their Apple ecosystem.

Why MacBook Neo Could Change Apple’s Laptop Strategy

For years, Apple’s Mac lineup had a noticeable gap. Consumers could either buy the MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro, with little middle ground.

The MacBook Neo fills that gap by creating a true entry-level Mac aimed at everyday users.

In the broader laptop market, affordable devices dominate sales. Budget Windows laptops and Chromebooks have long been the go-to choice for students and home users.

By launching the MacBook Neo, Apple is finally stepping into that segment.

If successful, the device could introduce millions of new users to macOS and strengthen Apple’s ecosystem in the long run.

While it may not replace the MacBook Air for power users, the MacBook Neo could become the most accessible Mac ever, making Apple laptops more mainstream than before.
